The Origin of Pizzas
Pizza’s origins can be traced back to ancient times, when numerous ancient societies created basic flatbreads with a variety of toppings. The focaccia, a flat bread known to the Romans as panis focacius, was most likely a forerunner of pizza. Toppings were then added to the focaccia.
In the 18th or early 19th century, similar flatbread dishes in Naples, Italy, evolved into modern pizza. The word pizza was originally recorded in Gaeta in A.D. 997, and afterwards in various parts of Central and Southern Italy. Pizza was mostly consumed in Italy and by Italian emigrants. This changed after World War II, when Allied troops stationed in Italy began to enjoy pizza as well as other Italian dishes.
